Sunrising over Shanklin beach

The Fig Tree is an owner-run boutique hotel at 10 Queen's Road in Shanklin, Isle of Wight, for guests who want calm, comfort and genuine hospitality. Breakfast is included in every rate, the beach is about a 10-minute walk away, and our suites face the sea. Here are ten reasons guests choose to stay.

There is a certain freedom that comes when the weekends are yours again, the calendar is lighter and the urge to wander returns. If you are looking for somewhere to slow down and reconnect, somewhere stylish, peaceful and restful, here is why The Fig Tree might suit you.

1. Is it close to the sea but still peaceful?

The hotel sits on Queen's Road, a short walk from Shanklin beach, close enough to enjoy the sea air and far enough for peace and quiet. Morning strolls along the esplanade with a coffee are an easy start to the day. Shanklin itself is one of the island's prettiest towns. Explore Shanklin Old Village, with its thatched cottages, tearooms and independent shops, or follow the coastal path south towards Ventnor. Our things to do in Shanklin guide has plenty more.

2. What are the rooms like?

Our rooms are designed to feel calm: soft colours, comfortable beds and thoughtful finishes. Every room has an en-suite wet room with a heated towel rail and complimentary toiletries, a double wardrobe and dressing table, tea and coffee facilities, a smart TV, high-speed Wi-Fi, a safe and USB sockets. Choose from the Bijou Double, Standard Double, Executive, Suite with Balcony, or the Bridal / Honeymoon Suite. See all the rooms, with "from" prices that vary by date.

3. Is it a good place for a break without the family?

Many of our guests are couples and friends who have the time and freedom to travel at their own pace. The Fig Tree is not about noise or crowds. It is about space to breathe. Walk the coastal path, sit on the terrace, or do absolutely nothing at all. Either way, it feels right.

4. Do you really look after guests personally?

We are run by two sisters, Wendy and Karen, and a small team who care about the details. Our house line says it plainly: Arrive as guests, leave as friends. Many guests come back because of the sense of belonging. Meet the people behind the hotel on our about us page.

5. What is the history of the building?

The Fig Tree began as a Victorian guesthouse. It closed in 2019 and was brought back to life by Wendy and Karen as a modern, peaceful boutique hotel. Original character meets a fresh, comfortable interior, so the hotel has a history in its bones and a calm spirit.

6. Can you really slow down here?

Yes. The lounge invites lingering, and the lounge bar has bifold doors that open onto our outdoor terrace. It is the kind of place that gives you permission to simply be, whether you are reading, resting or watching the light change. We think doing less often feels like more.

7. What is breakfast like, and where do I eat the rest of the day?

Breakfast is included in every rate and served from 8am to 10am. Choose cooked full English options or a self-service continental breakfast. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy needs are catered for with advance notice. We do not serve lunch or dinner to individual guests, but reception is happy to recommend restaurants in Shanklin Old Village and along the seafront. Guests often mention The Steamer for sea-view dining, Morgan's for modern British plates and The Crab Inn for traditional comfort food.

We support Isle of Wight producers, source ingredients locally and work with small island suppliers. Read about them in tasting the island. In the afternoon, you can book afternoon tea with 24 hours' notice. Happy hour runs every day from 5pm to 7pm with 20% off all drinks, and coffee and cake is served Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm. More on the breakfast and bar page.

8. What can I do beyond Shanklin?

From the hotel the island opens up. Popular places to visit include Osborne House, Queen Victoria's seaside retreat, Adgestone Vineyard for a wine-tasting afternoon, Ventnor Botanic Garden for an exotic stroll, and Cowes Harbour for sailing or people-watching. The Needles are about 45 minutes' drive. Whether you want heritage, nature or food, the island offers more variety than many people expect. For walkers, our guide to the best coastal walks near Shanklin is a good start, and Shanklin Chine and Rylstone Gardens are easy to explore on foot.

9. Is it worth visiting in every season?

Each season has its own mood.

  • Spring: wildflowers and bright coastal walks
  • Summer: long evenings and time by the sea
  • Autumn: golden light, peaceful beaches and quiet escapes
  • Winter: cosy comfort, sea mist and a warm bar

Whenever you come, the island's beauty and the hotel's calm make a good coastal escape. Spring and autumn are quieter times to visit.

10. Why do guests keep returning?

There is no single reason, more a collection of small ones: the sea air, the quiet mornings, the familiar faces. For couples marking anniversaries or birthdays, or simply taking a break because they can, The Fig Tree is a place where memories gather. Our reputation has grown the old-fashioned way, guest by guest. We are rated 4.6 on Google.
